Ladies, stop the madness. Unless you give away the ending, or do something utterly unforgivable, 5 or even 10 typos do NOT warrant a redo. And you are not obligated to fix those Amazon typos unless they say "we'll take this down." The other notes are simply advisory, which I've confirmed with Amazon. So, as I am departing, mostly, from CFC:

STOP THE MADNESS!! REWRITES ARE FROM THE DARK SIDE.

Bye and good luck!

Hitch
Hitchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00320501122327769279noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4954486699810607306.post-14042763011381958312013-06-25T15:07:19.238-07:002013-06-25T15:07:19.238-07:00I've made changes. I hope to have NONE, but that is beginning to seem more and more impossible.

Will I correct again? *heavy sigh* Probably. But I will also take extra care to be as certain as possible that my books are released error-free.Peg Brantleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04906858123466177508noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4954486699810607306.post-33946755364497163922013-06-25T09:09:31.569-07:002013-06-25T09:09:31.569-07:00I got a notice from Amazon about three errors in N...I got a notice from Amazon about three errors in No Substitute for Murder and the tone of it practically had me cowering under my desk. I fixed them immediately - or rather, I wrote to Booknook.biz and you and your wonderful staff fixed them. (I don't do my own formatting - heck, I can barely open an e-mail or comment on a blog.) A year later I found a couple of tiny things on my own - mostly quotes that never closed - and didn't bug you to make repairs because I'd moved on and on and on and because I regularly find a few minor issues with almost every book.Carolyn J. I fixed one of my indie standalones when I realized the proofreader I'd hired had completely failed, and the typos were numerous. I was also grateful that all my books were edited and proofread again by Amazon employees before they were republished with new covers. But you're right, publishers, including Amazon, don't redo books over a couple of typos, and I'm relieved that I no longer have that opportunity/responsibility.

But I'm sure a lot of indie authors are going to disagree with you because they do their own formatting, and they'll say that fixing errors is too easy to NOT make the changes.

Another aspect of the discussion are the "fixes" readers want to see that are subjective—such as the ending of the story or a character's behavior. It could be an endless rewrite. L.J. Sellershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10213491074676394406noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4954486699810607306.post-61642715140928651402013-06-25T07:51:46.164-07:002013-06-25T07:51:46.164-07:00I had five typos in Hit or Missus. I know because ...I had five typos in Hit or Missus. I know because several lovely readers told me so, including the reviewer on Amazon who said "the entire plot fell apart" due to those typos and then rated it 5 stars. (Yes, I am tempted to put 5 typos in every book if it gets me 5 stars.)

I corrected those errors and republished. To be fair, I didn't consider it a Word document that I could just play with at random - I was playing with price point and putting my books together in a set, and doing a bunch of stuff that made the republishing kind of secondary.

But I'll never do it again, because at the time, I saw it as less than professional. Now, I just make certain that each book is as flawless as it can possibly be.Gayle Carlinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15783449240138097315noreply@blogger.com
